Participants of the National Youth Convention woke up on Sunday morning, 26th November 2023 with the announcement of a nationwide curfew, instead of ending the gathering with the usual divine service and youth service.
Over 1000 youths and ministers gathered in Mile 91- a strategic center town of the country - from the four Apostles working areas. Mile 91 is a town in Tonkolili, north of Sierra Leone and it is 91 miles (145Km) from Freetown. They arrived on Friday, the 24th November 2023
Day One - Friday
After singing and prayer, there were welcoming/spiritual statements from the fours Apostles - Braima Saffa, Thaimu Kargbo, Freeman Bob Saidu and Abu Tamba Bangura. The National Youth Coordinator, Priest William Moitehun Sao-Lamin of NAYFEL- SL – New Apostolic Youth Fellowship-Sierra Leone, explained that they came to fellowship, share - experience, food/drinks, contacts details; learn from God’s word, health talks and issues relative to youth social/spiritual development.
Rtd. Apostle Albert Garaber, the guest speaker spoke about the theme: Serving and Reigning with Christ. He taught that serving is to be a servant – leadership is serving not position and reigning is ruling with spiritual authority opposed to natural rule; bringing souls for salvation. Ap. Garber advised youth to study the talents deposited in them by help of the Holy Spirit and honest people for guidance. He concluded with Colossians 1:27 - To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
This was followed by activities of youth groups: Choir festivities, drama/playlet, presentations on doctrinal topics, singing / dancing of gospel songs etc.
Day 2 – Saturday
The activity started with matching, singing, dancing from Mile 91-Freetown high way to Bongoland (resort center) – Mile91-Bo high way. Later there were presentations on: Youth Development by Priest Sao-Lamin, Spiritual Growth – Ap. Saffa, Discipleship – Ap. Bangura, Leadership development – Ap. Saidu, Outreach/Evangelism – Ap. Kargbo, Role of Youth/young adult – Community Evangelist Patrick Fayia Mansaray, Health talk on drug abuse by District Evangelist Alfred Benson Sesay respectively.
In the evening, participants went on the Roman Catholic Primary School field to play football, of competition amongst teams from the four Apostle working areas. At night there were singing – melodrama, culturaldance, speeches, comedy etc.
Day 3 - Sunday
Participants woke up with news of Wilberforce Military barracks attack in Freetown around 4 am and subsequently the declaration of a nationwide curfew. All were stranded in the houses, guest houses and hotels they lodged.
The National Youth Convention started joyfully but ended with disruption by the nationwide curfew...
